About City

Leh Ladakh
"India's Own Moonland"

Ladakh is a union territory in the Kashmir region of India. Formerly falling in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh was administered a union territory on 31st October 2019. Extending from the Siachen Glacier to the main Great Himalayas, Ladakh is a land like no other. Dominated by dramatic landscapes, Ladakh is known as the world's coldest desert.

Stunning Gompas (Tibetan Buddhist monasteries), fluttering prayer flags, whitewashed stupas, Ladakh is a riot of intricate murals and red-robed monks. It is said that only in Ladakh can a man sitting in the sun with his feet in the shade suffer from sunstroke and frostbite at the same time. With a culture similar to Tibetan culture, the people of Ladakh are friendly and welcoming to tourists.

Ladakh is an adventure playground for rafting and high-altitude trekking. Note that Leh Ladakh is inaccessible by road outside the summer months. The route passes close altogether from around October to May, and the only way to reach is by air. Chadar trek on frozen Zanskar river takes place in January to the end of February.

For those of us living in the constant confusion about the difference between these twin locations, Leh-Ladakh, here is something that might help you. Ladakh is divided into two districts: district Leh and district Kargil. About City

Sham Valley is a beautiful place in Ladakh definitely worth visiting. Also known as the apricot valley, the place has a few amazing destinations. You can have both nature and spiritual experience at a Sham Valley trip. Located near Leh town, Sham valley is a popular sightseeing destination from Leh. Among all the places to visit in Ladakh, Sham Valley has been gaining quite a popularity. Infact, a large part of the Srinagar-Leh Highway snakes through the Sham Valley. Those of you who have already been to Ladakh, might have already explored parts of the gorgeous Sham Valley.

Even a few years back, Sham Valley was known mostly amidst the trekkers through the Sham Valley Trek. But trekking is not required to explore Sham Valley. The region is easily accessible by cars. However, trekking is always a wonderful activity, something that brings out the best in people and places.

So, which part of Srinagar-Leh Highway falls within Sham Valley? Usually, it is thought that Sham Valley starts after you cross Spituk Gompa and goes till Lamayuru. The common notion is that the road from Leh to Lamayuru passes through the Valley. However, Sham Valley actually consists of a number of villages off the main Srinagar-Leh Highway. Roughly, it starts a little ahead of Likir. Some of the main villages of Sham valley are Suspol, Bazgoo, Saspochey, Hemis Shukpachan and Uley.

Places to visit in Sham Valley
There are quite a number of attractions in the area. A day trip from Leh is enough to do a Sham valley trip. There is actually a long list of places to visit, but the driving distance is only around 160-170 km for a complete round trip from Leh. Some of these places are falls right on the Highway, while for the others you might have to take a detour. While some places like Magnetic Hill, Alchi and Likir Monastery are quite well known in the Ladakh tourism circuit, a few others are relatively offbeat and only a few visit those places.

1. Gurudwara Pathar Sahib
Located around 22 km from Leh at an altitude of 3600 m, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib is a beautiful oasis amidst the rugged terrain of Ladakh. Dedicated to Guru Nanak, this place is located right of the Srinagar-Leh Highway. The place is known for a large boulder that has the imprint of Guru Nanak Ji’s hand on it. There are a number of stories and legends related to this place. Gurudwara Pathar Sahib is a peaceful place. Visit the Gurudwara, offer your prayers and then continue your journey in the beautiful land of monasteries and monks.

2. Magnetic Hill Ladakh
The next attraction is the Magnetic Hills located around 5 km ahead of Gurudwara Pathar Sahib and around 30 km from Leh. You will easily identify the place with a large signboard on the road put by the army.
It is one place that defied gravity! It is believed that the hills nearby have magnetic properties and so have a strong pull on the car. So, if you place your car in neutral in the marked area, the car will go uphill.

3. Sangam Point, Confluence of Indus and Zanskar Rivers
Another 3 km ahead of the Magnetic Hill is the Sangam or the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar Rivers. Sangam is one of my favourite places in Ladakh. From the vantage point, you can see the confluence of the Indus River flowing in from Tibet and the Zanskar River flowing from Zanskar Valley.

About City

Pangong Tso, Leh Ladakh
The most popular tourist attraction in Ladakh, Pangong lake is an endorheic (landlocked) lake situated at 4350 meters. Also known as Pangong Tso it is 12 kilometres long and extends from India to Tibet. Almost 60% of Pangong Lake lies in the Tibetan Autonomous Region. A unique feature of the lake is that it does not remain blue throughout the year or even the day, rather it changes colours from azure to light blue to green and grey too! It is famous amongst tourists as Ladakh lake, the spot where the Bollywood movie "3 Idiots" was shot.

Since the enthralling Pangong Lake falls on the Sino-Indian Actual Line of Control, an inner line permit is required to visit it. The Indian Nationals can easily obtain individual permits while other foreign nationals need to obtain a group permit, with at least 3 persons in the group, accompanied by an accredited guide. The permit can be obtained at the tourist office in Leh, for a small fee. Owing to its altitude, the Pangong Lake temperature ranges from -5°C to 10°C as a result of which it freezes completely during winters in spite of its salinity.

Pangong Lake Camping
Camping next to the lake is no more allowed. The ideal place to live is 32 kilometres from Pangong Lake in a place called Tangste. Also, there are places to live in and around the vicinity of Lukung which is close also located close by and has the provision of eco huts. One can, however, be based at Leh, which has numerous options for accommodation and take a day trip to the lake.

Pangong Lake and its Bollywood Connect
The unadulterated natural beauty of the Pangong Lake makes it a favourite destination among directors for shooting and filming. A number of blockbusters have been shot here, which includes amazing works such as Dil Se, 3 Idiots, Heroes, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Sanam Re, Waqt and Tashan among many others. The Bollywood junkie in you will definitely feel like a superstar here!

Flora and Fauna at Pangong Lake
Due to the briny water, Pangong Tso does not support aquatic life other than some ocean bugs called crustaceans by oceanographers. Pangong lake is home to many migrating birds in summer, and one can witness numerous ducks and gulls "surfing". Other than being a haven for these birds, the stunning lake is also an important breeding ground for birds like Brahmani ducks and seagulls. Some are lucky to spot a Kiang which is a wild ass or a Marmot, which is a brownish rodent native to Ladakh that can grow up to the size of a small dog.

Pangong Lake in Winters
Winter turns the landscape of Pangong into a shimmering and snowy extravaganza. The mountains exhibit a kaleidoscopic contrast with sand dominating one side while snow makes an appearance on the other. Pangong Tso freezes to an absolute turquoise, and you can even walk all over this frozen beauty. The sun doesn't make much of an appearance and fog envelopes the landscape. However, the temperature here gets to a minimum of -14°C, so be sure to pack loads and loads of woollens!

Pangong Lake Weather & Best Time to Visit
It is best to visit Pangong Tso in summers, precisely from June to September, as in winter, due to its extreme weather and high altitude, the vacation would not be as enjoyable and the lake would be frozen as well. A visit in summer will open an avenue to witness different migratory birds and other flora fauna.

Food at Pangong Lake
There are a few eateries and stalls at the lake selling popular local items, Maggi and tea. One might want to, however, carry their own food for a trip to the lake. While options for food at Pangong lake are limited, you may find popular and local preparations such as Thukpa which is a noodle soup, Tsampa, known in Ladakhi as Ngamphe (roasted barley flourished barley flour), and Skyu which is a heavy pasta dish with plenty of veggies as well as the very popular and delicious Momos which are steamed dumplings stuffed with vegetables or meat.

Need to Know
1. It is advised to carry more and sufficient warm clothes to withstand the cold weather.
2. It is an ecologically fragile place where littering is a serious offence. Kindly dispose of your waste wisely.
3. For security reasons, boating at the lake is not permitted.

How to reach Pangong Lake
It is a breathtaking 5-hour drive from Leh, with the entire route to this destination being the epitome of scenic beauty. The Lake falls on the Sino-Indian Line of Actual Control, and you are required to get Inner Line permission. Also because the Pangong Lake is situated very close to the border, you will be allowed to visit only up to the Spangmik village.

From Leh, you need to pass through the Changla Pass and then through Tangste. Regular buses by the state road transport corporation are also available. In addition to this, you can hire taxis, motorbikes, jeeps and cars are reasonable prices as well. Make sure you have enough fuel in your vehicle as there are no petrol pumps in Pangong.

The road journey from Leh to Pangong is thrilling in itself. Since the drive is tiring (though breath-taking), it is advised to avoid making the return journey the same day.

About City

After Basgo, as you drive towards Saspol, you will find a diversion towards the right just about 10 km ahead of Saspol. This will take you to Likir Monastery. The caves are located about 60 km from Leh, on a ridge in the Saspol village on the northern bank of the Indus River. Sham Valley thus has a mix of nature and cultural experiences in Ladakh. You can explore all these places or make a choice according to your time and preference. We did not explore all these places in a single day.

Sometimes, tourists visit some of these places on the way from Kargil to Leh. In such a case, you might be able to visit Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, Sangam Point and Magnetic Hill. Also known as Pangong Tso it is 12 kilometres long and extends from India to Tibet. Almost 60% of Pangong Lake lies in the Tibetan Autonomous Region. The permit can be obtained at the tourist office in Leh, for a small fee. Owing to its altitude, the Pangong Lake temperature ranges from -5°C to 10°C as a result of which it freezes completely during winters in spite of its salinity.
