Lying on the western coast, Goa is India's smallest state and unlike any other, known for its endless beaches, stellar nightlife, eclectic seafood, world-heritage listed architecture. Spread across just 3,702 km, Goa lies in the Konkan region. It is a far cry from the hippie haven or a beach getaway, and one of the only few destinations that is open 24x7. The laid-backness (susegad) of Goa attracts as many international tourists as it does Indians, or even more so.

The Goans are quite friendly towards tourists and celebrate many festivals throughout the year, the most famous being the New Year and Goa Carnival. While the seafood is excellent, Goa has one of the best nightlife in India with trendy bars, beach shacks, elegant cafes and many clubs and discotheques. Thanks to lower alcohol prices in the state, Goa is also great for younger tourists with relatively tighter pockets.

For those of us perpetually confused between North Goa and South Goa, this might help - the state of Goa is divided into North Goa and South Goa. While North Goa is the nightlife hub where all the touristy beaches, flea markets, and beach shacks are located, South Goa is the land of luxurious resorts and laid-back beach vibes. 

Having been a Portuguese territory for almost 450 years, the Portuguese architecture is nowhere as prevalent as in Goa - visit one of the many whitewashed churches, crumbling forts or spectacular churches. The yellow houses with purple doors, ochre coloured mansions and oyester shell windows is what completes the kalieodscope of Goan architecture.

Panjim, the capital city located in the centre overlooks the calm Mandovi River where the famous floating casinos of Goa are docked. The centre is well-connected with an international airport and roads and trains run from North to South part of Goa. With a coastline stretching for over 100 kilometres, Goa has stunning beaches. While Baga and Calangute are more popular among the Indian family crowd, Anjuna and Arambol draw a lot of foreign tourists. The beaches in South Goa are relatively lesser explored, but some of them like Agonda and Palolem are more beautiful.

1. Calangute Beach
Popular as the "Queen of Beaches", the Calangute Beach of Goa is among the top ten bathing beaches in the world. Being one of the busiest and most commercial beaches of Goa, it is swarming with eating joints, shacks and clubs serving cocktails, beer and seafood. The Calangute Beach is also known for its water sports activities like parasailing, water surfing, banana ride and jet-skiing.

2. Fort Aguada
Fort Aguada-"A Fortress of Tranquility", is a 17th-century Portuguese fort looking out at the confluence of Mandovi River and the Arabian Sea. The crumbling ramparts of the fort stand on the Sinquerim Beach. The highlight of the fort is a lone four-storey lighthouse (which is one-of-its-kind in Asia) and a stunning view of the sunset. Fort Aguada has also been used as Aguada jail. A statue in front of the jail salutes the freedom fighters, giving the fort a touch of patriotism.

4. Chapora Fort

5. Basilica of Bom Jesus

1.  Dine on a Cruise

Goa Carnival Festival Celebrations & Events
The epicentre of the Carnival is the capital city of Panjim, although celebrations occur at several places across the state.

Parade and the Floats

King Momo
A nominal leader, known as King Momo, is chosen before the celebrations, who is supposedly given charge of the state to rule for four days. Generally, a fat, jolly person is selected for the job, as per the practice all around the globe. King Momo of the Goan Carnival leads the troupe of dancing men and women, with the message of 'Kha, piyeaanimajjakar' meaning, 'Eat, drink and enjoy'.

23. Shigmo Festival
The Shigmo festival that takes place in the Konkani diaspora of Goa, during the spring season, is a beautiful and auspicious festival of Hindus that celebrates the vibrancy of colours. The festival spans five days. In other regions of the country, Hindus, more commonly, celebrate Holi, which is a part of it.

24. Igitun Chalne
Igitun Chalne celebrated in May, is a religious festival in the northern district of Goa in the temple of Sirigao, which is located in Bicholim Taluka. It is also known as the “fire walk” festival. Devotees walk on hot coals in commemoration of the goddess Lairaya.

1. Butterfly Beach
A little to the south of Palolem in Canacona region of Goa lies the Butterfly Beach. This beach, also known as Honeymoon Beach, is one of the most secluded and lesser-known beaches of Goa. The beach is mostly accessible by a boat (ferry) ride from the nearby beaches.

2. Divar Island
Divar Island is a slice of heaven tucked away in dense woods amidst the beauty of nature. Connected to Old Goa only through ferry service, this island is synonymous with natural beauty, serenity and tranquillity.

3. Fontainhas and Sao Tome
Fontainhas and Sao Tome is a beautiful Latin Quarter located in Panaji on the banks of the Ourem Creek and named after the natural springs nearby. It was laid out on a piece of land acquired by a Goan in the 18th century who had made a fortune in Mozambique. The quarter is now recognised as a heritage site and is famous for its charming Portuguese style houses on the base of the Altinho hills.

22. Chapora Beach

Mobor Beach is a tranquil beach located in South Goa, a few minutes' walk from the famous Cavelossim Beach. It is a unique beach with water on three sides. The popular activities at Mobor Beach are watersports, dolphin spotting cruise, bird spotting and cruising along the River Sal.

39. Corjuem Fort
Built in 1705 by the Portuguese, Corjuem Fort is located in Aldona village near River Mapusa. Also known as Khojuem Fort, it is one of the smaller forts of Goa. Besides providing a surreal view of the adjacent surroundings, the fort also boasts of being one of the only two inland forts that continue to survive till today.

40. Betul Beach

77. Church Of Our Lady Of The Mount
Church Of Our Lady Of The Mount is a 16th-century church in Goa famous for its religious significance and picturesque location. The structure is now partly in ruins and closed for daily exploration, but an evening mass is held on the 8th of every month.

Church Of Our Lady of Miracles is a 16th century Church built by the Portuguese in Goa. The Church was initially dedicated to St. Jerome, therefore, it is also known as St. Jerome Church. It is most famous for its annual festival, on the 16th day after Easter.

102. Convent of Santa Monica and The Chapel of The Weeping Cross

Built in 1606 in Monte Santo, the historic building took a total of 21 years to get constructed. It was believed to be Asia’s first and largest nunnery that could accommodate around 300 people at once.

Also known as the Betalbatim Church, Our Lady Of Remedios Capital was founded by the Jesuits in the 17th century. The Church is famous for its splendid architecture, well-maintained lawns and its serene ambience. 

104. Church of St. Cajetan
Built in 1661 by Italian friars of the Theatine order, the Church of St. Cajetan is located half a kilometer away from Se Cathedral in Old Goa. Originally called as the Church of Divine Providence, it is believed to have been modelled on the original designs of the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome. The church has a pearly white exterior and is one of the landmarks of the capital city.

105. Convent and Church of St. John of God
The Convent and The Church of St. John of God is an olden Portuguese days structure built in 1685 dedicated to Our Lady of Good Success. Situated in North Goa, next to the tower of St. Augustine, the building is very ordinary looking depicting the traditional designs of Portuguese architecture.

122. Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary
If you are eager to witness some unique species, head to Cotigao. You find Gazelles, Sloth Bears, Porcupines, and Panthers in abundance. The best time to visit the sanctuary would be at dawn when you get to witness the sunrise along with sightings of rare species. It is noted for its observation deck which is an area nestled in the foliage to witness the animals closely but still remain unnoticed. It makes for a great feature.

How to Reach Goa

Goa is easily accessible by road, rail, and air from most parts of India and international destinations. The Dabolim Airport (the only airport in Goa) is an international airport and a military airbase. It is connected by regular flights to all Indian cities as well as international destinations like London, Dubai, Moscow, Doha, Kuala Lumpur among others. The airport has two terminals where Terminal 1 is domestic while Terminal 2 is the international terminal. Vasco da Gama Railway Station and Madgaon Station are the two major railheads serving Goa. Both stations are extremely well-linked to all parts of India. Apart from this, plenty of long-distance inter-state buses ply to and from Goa which is connected through four national highways.

The nearest major entry point to Goa from different parts of the world is the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai. Mumbai being the major city is easily accessible to Goa via flights, railways, and roadways.

Best time to visit Goa

The best time to visit Goa is from November to February when the weather is ideal for sightseeing and relaxing on the stunning beaches. The temperature during this time ranges around 20 to 30 degrees Celcius and it is also the peak tourist season in Goa. Monsoons from June to September are another great time to visit Goa if you love the beach during rains. Summer is not a good time to visit Goa. With the temperature fluctuating between 25 to 35 degrees Celcius, the weather from March to May is extremely hot and humid.

Food of Goa

Goa is home to everything refreshing, zesty, exotic and colourful. And this includes Goan food. The food here is a blend of Konkani, Hindu, Portuguese and Catholic cuisines, providing wide and vibrant choices. Seafood, coconut milk, rice and local spices are the main elements of Goan cuisine and fish, curry and rice form the staple food. Goan food with its unique combination of coconut, rice, and spices form a rich Portuguese as well as South Indian cuisine. 

Traditional Goan dishes are xacuti (spicy chicken or meat cooked in red sauce), vindaloo (spicy dish marinated with vinegar and garlic), cafreal (fried chicken cooked in green masala and toddy vinegar), and bebinca (Goan dessert layered with coconut).
